The Home Entertainment Center, Ca. 1927

Friday, January 30th, 2009

1927_ent_center

This is from the May, 1927 issue of Radio News. This guy had a phonograph, a radio, a small movie projector, and a speaker, which he could move behind the movie screen. Apparently he could also operate the lights and curtains by remote control.

Check out this quote:

It may be feasible in the future to transmit entertainment and instructional programs by line-wire carrier-current telephony from one national studio to your home. A number of different programs may be sent on the same wires conveying the usual telephone conversations.

And still nothing to watch.

Speaking of the 25th Anniversary of the Mac…

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

mac_i4Or more properly, the Macintosh ad during the 1984 Super bowl. I thought I’d share this picture. We picked up an original Mac at a flea market several years ago. It works. This is the picture inside, of the signatures of everyone who worked on the computer. This was pressed into the plastic of every machine. Look around and you’ll probably recognize a few names. Researchers make car parts out of coconuts; swallows busy for years

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Hey, we’ve got oil here in Texas, but we’re also researching alternatives to the black stuff. Take the fine folks at Baylor University, who have figured out how to make parts for car interiors out of coconut husks.

Now, they have to put their math geniuses to work to figure out how many swallows it’ll take to transport those husks.

Waiting For the Windows 7 Beta?

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Well, you get to keep waiting. Apparently, they’re adding more capacity.

Those of you who got a legal ISO download (like me) had better hope there are still keys available when the turn on the spigot.

2.5 million? Oy.

You KNOW You Were Thinking This Tuesday Night

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Unless you’re living in a cave, you know all about the momentous event that took place on Tuesday. No, I’m not talking about THAT. I’m talking about CNN’s hologram technology.

Slate has their own take on Wolf Blitzer’s inteview with Jessica Yellin.

(Small caveat: I couldn’t get this video to run under Mozilla, but it worked under IE just fine. Fitting, perhaps, given the subject matter.)
