The awards are named for Hugh Gernsback, the publisher of <em>Amazing Stories</em> and other SF magazines. He was also a noted SF author in his own right. His most famous book was <em>Ralph 124C 41+</em>. Frist serialized in 1911, the story featured a heroic scientist who saved a beautiful woman from an avalance by directing a ray from New York to Switzerland. You can read a preview of the 1926 book at <a href="http://lookwhatifoundtoday.net/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-feed-statistics/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL2Jvb2tzLmdvb2dsZS5jb20vYm9va3M/aWQ9cWRmLUd0SlV3cndDJmFtcDtwcmludHNlYz1mcm9udGNvdmVyJmFtcDtkcT1pbmF1dGhvcjpIdWdvK2luYXV0aG9yOkdlcm5zYmFjayZhbXA7ZWk9YXdhV1NLcVRMWVRNaWdIUmk0akpEQSZhbXA7c2lnPUFDZlUzVTF1NHV3emQyMDBsRVdhM3lNcGRSa21VM0lZalEjUFBBMjcsTTE=">Google Books</a>.</p>
<p>Gernsback also published a number of electronics-related magazines. In the back of a 1927 edition of <em>Radio News</em> I found this ad:</p>
<div id="attachment_31" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"><img class="size-full wp-image-31" title="ralph124c41" src="http://lookwhatifoundtoday.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/ralph124c41.jpg" alt="Ad for Ralph 124C 41+" width="300" height="736" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Ad for Ralph 124C 41+</p></div>
<p>Good luck to all of the Hugo nominees. Wish I could be there. It&#8217;s got to be cooler than here in Texas!</p>
